Our Story

It is incredible how one small idea can grow into something truly special. Over 30 years later, Masjid al-Mu'min of Pittsburgh is still standing and has been working very hard to establish the type of Islam which was meant to reform all walks of society to serve the one and only true God, Allah, the Most High who is without any partners, who exists without a place. Under the leadership of Imam Na'eem Abdullah and the consultation of its Majlis Ash Shurah, Masjid al-Mu'min is dedicated to reviving the spirit of Islam in its vicinity. Masjid al-Mu'min is what some may call a “Sunni” community. “Sunni” is short for “Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah” which means “People of the Sunnah (the Prophetic Way) and the Community.

“Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah” has been defined by classical scholars as those who are Ash’arī or Maturidī in Aqeedah (Islamic Belief); Hanafī, Mālikī, Shāfi'ī or Hanbalī in Fiqh (outward practice); and those who follow any of Turūq us-Sūfiyyah (the spiritual paths).

We at Masjid al-Mu'min are Ash’arī in Aqeedah, Mālikī in Fiqh and Qaadiriyyah in Tareeqah. This is what we adhere to and what we teach as it has reached us by the route of the great African Mujaddid (Islamic Reviver of the Faith) - Shehu ‘Uthmān Dan Fodiyo (may Allah envelop him in His Mercy) (d. 1232). This is what we are upon. We are grateful to Allah for Allah’s guidance and we are unapologetic about it.

Our Mission

At Masjid al-Mu'min of Pittsburgh, we take pride in being a small community that is not afraid to put in the work needed to become a viable community. We believe that with sincerity to the deen of Islam, generosity, and love, there is nothing we can’t accomplish. But above all, our strength lies in reliance on the One who created us. It has been proven time and time again in the seerah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad,ﷺ,  how a small number beat the odds because of their strong faith as Muslims. Each and every one of us has the capability to contribute no matter our experience or background. With this strength behind us, imagine what we can achieve together.
